Rangpur: National Citizens Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Md Nahid Islam MP today announced the party’s intention to push for reforms as the Parliament session is set to commence tomorrow. He emphasized the nation’s anticipation for the session, highlighting the need to address demands applicable to all.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nahid Islam made these remarks while serving as the chief guest at the Rangpur divisional Iftar and Doa Mahfil of the NCP, held at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Stadium in Rangpur city. The event featured a keynote address by the party’s Member Secretary Akhter Hossain MP, with Rangpur divisional organising secretary Dr. Atiqur Rahman Mojahid MP presiding over the session.
Special guests included NCP northern chief organiser Md Sarjis Alam and chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, with the presence of Jatiya Juba Shakti President Tariqul Islam, NCP central leader Sadia Farzana Dina, and various other party leaders.
Nahid Islam expressed hope that the ruling party would commit to constitutional reforms, stressing the opposition’s role in making the country free from corruption, loan defaulters, extortionists, and terrorism. He referenced the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Election and Referendum, noting that the ‘yes’ vote should be a parliamentary responsibility to implement.
He underscored the importance of allowing the opposition a voice in Parliament and called for joint implementation of the referendum pledge by the government and opposition. Highlighting the historical significance of Rangpur and the July Uprising, Nahid Islam affirmed the party’s regional victories and the symbolic resonance of the ‘Shapla Kali.’
Addressing regional discrimination, he announced NCP’s participation in upcoming city corporation elections under the ‘Shapla Kali’ symbol, promising forthcoming surprises in local government elections. He raised concerns about the security threats faced by women and children, calling for accountability and an end to impunity.
Nahid Islam warned of potential impacts from a global war and economic recession, advocating for national unity as essential for progress. He asserted that the government cannot navigate these challenges alone, emphasizing the necessity for collective action.
The event was attended by family members of the martyrs and injured from the July Uprising, as well as leaders and activists from BNP, NCP, Jamaat, AB Party, and other civil society groups.
