Dhaka: A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to six months in jail for killing his neighbor’s pet cat in the Mohammadpur area of the city. The convict, Akbar Hossain Shiblu, was tried in absentia. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir delivered the judgment and also fined Shiblu Tk 10,000. In default of payment, he will serve an additional month in jail. The court has issued a warrant for his arrest.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the case was filed by Nafisa Nourin Chowdhury on February 5 of last year, on behalf of People for Animal Welfare. Shiblu, a resident of Muktijoddha Tower in Mohammadpur, was accused of killing the pet cat, which belonged to Mansur, another resident of the same building. The cat went missing on February 1, and subsequent investigations led to Shiblu being charged on July 14 of the same year.

The prosecution presented CCTV footage during the trial, which showed Shiblu kicking the cat. The footage further revealed that after the cat became motionless, Shiblu pressed it under his foot to ensure it was dead. This evidence formed the basis of the charges against him.
