Rajshahi: Speakers at a discussion underscored the importance of addressing not only natural disasters but also those caused by human activities, cautioning that the latter could pose significant challenges for society in the future.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the speakers noted that disasters have traditionally been linked to events such as cyclones, pandemics, floods, desertification, water scarcity, and food shortages. However, they pointed out that a lack of education and moral values could also result in human-induced disasters with long-term societal impacts. These insights were shared during a discussion meeting at the Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner’s Office to commemorate National Disaster Preparedness Day 2026.
The event, themed “We will fight through disaster preparedness and build a youthful Bangladesh,” featured Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter as the chief guest and was chaired by Rajshahi District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Hai Sarkar. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sabur Ali, Deputy Director of the Rajshahi District Information Office Nafeala Nasrin, District Primary Education Officer Anwar Hossain, and Senior Station Officer of Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence Enayet Ul Haque also addressed the gathering. Representatives from the Rajshahi Red Crescent and students from various educational institutions were present.
Afia Akhter highlighted the modern-day human-induced disaster of children’s growing internet addiction, emphasizing its impact on morality, behavior, and social values. She called attention to the moral crisis in society, noting that the absence of moral values leads to unethical acts, such as food adulteration. “These are also disasters that must be prevented,” she stated.
She further emphasized the significance of public awareness alongside government initiatives in disaster preparedness and mitigation, noting that institutional support must be complemented by active citizen participation. Akhter explained that the government provides corrugated tin sheets and financial assistance as part of its disaster preparedness measures but stressed that public awareness is crucial to reducing the impacts of natural disasters.
Akhter also warned of the current risks associated with fire hazards, pointing out that fires can occur in various settings, including offices. She mentioned the increasing occurrence of earthquakes within the country and stressed the need for knowledge about safe exits and evacuation routes in buildings, advocating for regular drills, especially for schoolchildren.
The day’s events began with a colorful rally organized by the Rajshahi district administration and implemented by the Department of Disaster Management. A fire drill demonstration by the Rajshahi Fire Service and Civil Defence followed the discussion, showcasing disaster preparedness efforts.
