Dhaka: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Wednesday announced that a nationwide crackdown on extortionists and listed armed criminals is set to commence shortly in the capital. He made this announcement following a view-exchange meeting with senior officers of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at its headquarters.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Home Minister stated that operations will initially start in Dhaka. Comprehensive lists of extortionists and listed armed criminals are being prepared across the country. These lists will undergo a scrutiny process to ensure neutrality, and subsequent drives will be launched to bring the offenders under the law. The minister emphasized that stern action will be taken against armed criminals and terrorists who are creating disorder in society, expressing hope that these steps will help restore peace and maintain law and order across the country.
The minister also sought public cooperation, expressing the government's expectation of support from citizens and assuring them of necessary measures. On the issue of traffic congestion in Dhaka, he mentioned the formation of a special cell, led by the DMP Commissioner, which will submit a report within a week. As part of initial measures, battery-run rickshaws will be regulated on the VIP road from Uttara to the Secretariat via Airport Road.
Addressing concerns about the harassment of journalists, the minister stated that law enforcers have been instructed not to harass journalists once they properly identify themselves. Regarding the ongoing investigation of the Hadi murder case, he mentioned that no detailed statement can be provided until the investigation is completed. On the topic of changing police uniforms, he noted that discussions will be held with the police department, and appropriate steps will be taken.
Earlier, in his address to senior DMP officers, Salahuddin Ahmed urged them to uphold the image of Bangladesh Police and avoid actions that could tarnish the force's reputation. He also sought Japan's support in police reform, stressing the need to recover illegal arms and arrest terrorists and extortionists to bring them to justice. Additionally, he directed police to remain on high alert and emphasized the modernization of traffic management to reduce congestion. The minister listened to concerns raised by police officials and offered necessary guidance.
