Gazipur: Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee emphasized on Sunday that no canal excavation project would be halted due to pressure from influential parties, a practice allegedly prevalent during previous unelected administrations. Speaking to reporters during his visit to the historic Choukkar Canal in Sreepur upazila, he asserted that the current government, led by Tarique Rahman, remains committed to continuing these vital projects despite any challenges.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Minister Anee highlighted the historical significance of the Choukkar Canal, noting that its initial excavation took place during Ziaur Rahman’s presidency. He reiterated the government’s dedication to restoring and safeguarding the nation’s waterways, which are crucial for the country’s ecological balance and water management.
State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, who accompanied Minister Anee, announced that legal actions would be pursued against industries and individuals encroaching on canals and rivers. This move underscores the government’s resolve to protect these vital natural resources from unlawful exploitation and degradation.
During the visit, environmental activists presented a memorandum to Minister Anee, calling for stronger enforcement measures to protect natural water bodies. The minister acknowledged their concerns and assured them of the government’s commitment to addressing these issues. Following the Choukkar Canal inspection, Minister Anee proceeded to the Lablong Canal as part of his area tour, further demonstrating the administration’s proactive stance on water resource management.
