Barishal: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan emphasized the need for transparent and nepotism-free distribution of family cards to ensure that genuine beneficiaries receive government support. Speaking at a meeting with district-level officials at the Barishal Circuit House, Minister Swapan announced the formation of teams in every union to select beneficiaries.

According to United News of Bangladesh, each team will include the union chairman and two social workers, operating under the leadership of the Upazila Nirbahi Officer. The minister stressed the importance of verifying beneficiaries properly and distributing family cards fairly, free from political influence.

The minister also underscored the significance of maintaining accuracy in the work of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, stating that a country’s development and institutional strength depend on correct statistics. He highlighted the necessity of accurate data collection, proper storage, and swift delivery of data for modern decision-making.

Turning to healthcare, Swapan noted the inadequacy of advanced medical services in Barishal, despite its status as the capital of southern Bangladesh. He pointed out the challenges and costs faced by ordinary people when transferring critically ill patients to Dhaka. To address this, he proposed upgrading Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital with modern facilities and establishing a specialized trauma center in Barishal as urgent measures.

Senior officials from various government departments and journalists were present at the meeting.
