Three Jailed for Illegal Sand Extraction in Netrokona

Netrokona: A mobile court today sentenced three individuals to two months’ imprisonment each for engaging in illegal sand extraction in Kalmakanda upazila of the district. The operation, led by Executive Magistrate and Kalmakanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Masudur Rahman, also resulted in the confiscation of three hand-trolleys loaded with 150 cubic feet of sand.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convicted men were identified as Moyna Mia, 45, Md. Abdul Hai, 30, and Md. Zakir Hossain, 25, all hailing from Kalmakanda Sadar union. Acting on a tip-off, the upazila administration launched a drive in the Kalaikandi area under Rongchhati union during the morning hours. The three were apprehended on the spot for engaging in sand extraction and transportation, which contravenes the Balumahal and Soil Management Act.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalmakanda Police Station Md. Siddik Hossain confirmed that the convicts were transferred to Netrokona District Jail later in the afternoon. The UNO emphasized that such operations will persist in the interest of public welfare.
