Dhaka: The Appellate Division on Thursday acquitted Khan Akram, who had been sentenced to a life term imprisonment in a case concerning crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in the Bagerhat district. The bench, led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, delivered the order following a hearing on the matter.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 had previously sentenced Sheikh Sirajul Haque, also known as Siraj Master, to death and Khan Akram to life imprisonment on August 11, 2015. The case was filed over crimes committed during the Liberation War. The tribunal found five of the six charges against Sirajul Haque to be proven, while one of the three charges against Akram was upheld.
Khan Akram subsequently filed an appeal against the judgment. Another accused in the case, Abdul Latif Talukdar, died during the trial proceedings. Both Akram and Sirajul Haque had filed appeal petitions before the Appellate Division. During the ongoing trial proceedings, Sirajul Haque passed away.
