Dhaka: Md. Mostaqur Rahman officially assumed his role as the 14th Governor of Bangladesh Bank on Thursday. He was welcomed by senior officials and staff upon his arrival at the central bank headquarters at around 11 am. In a brief interaction with reporters, Mostaqur stated, "I have arrived; let me start the work first, then we can talk."
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mostaqur's appointment was confirmed through a notification by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday. His four-year term replaces the tenure of ex-governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur. The appointment follows Section 10(5) of the Bangladesh Bank Order, 1972, which mandates the governor to sever all other professional affiliations.
Prior to his new role, Mostaqur was involved with the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) as Chairman of the BGMEA Standing Committee on Bangladesh Bank. He was also a member of the Chittagong Stock Exchange Ltd. His involvement extends to leading trade bodies such as the Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB), Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), and Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
A central bank press release highlighted Mostaqur's over 30 years of experience in corporate finance, export economics, institutional governance, and financial systems management. His expertise includes financial oversight, regulatory compliance, banking-sector engagement, and capital management. Mostaqur has extensive experience in manufacturing, real estate, agro-based enterprises, and industrial ventures, with responsibilities in financial planning, investment oversight, and governance frameworks.
Mostaqur's academic credentials include a B.Com (Hons.) and a Masters Degree from the University of Dhaka's Department of Accounting. He later qualified as a Cost and Management Accountant from the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB). His contributions to structured dialogue on financial stability, industrial financing, and economic sustainability have been noteworthy.
Furthermore, Mostaqur is actively engaged in charitable and community development activities, reflecting his commitment to societal welfare.
