Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday emphasized the importance of keeping education, research, arts, and literature free from political influence to maintain a civilised society. He made these remarks while addressing the Ekushey Padak 2026 award ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister stated that the government is focused on establishing a liberal democratic state system with strong moral standards. This initiative aims to propel the country forward in various fields of knowledge, including education, literature, arts, science, and technology. He expressed the need for guidance and direction from the nation's wise and learned citizens in this journey.
Tarique Rahman highlighted that while politicians are responsible for running the state, it is the wise and distinguished citizens who act as guiding forces in society. He stressed the importance of having a substantial number of accomplished individuals in a state to enhance the society's prosperity and moral standards. The Prime Minister noted that honoring distinguished citizens not only serves the state's need but also honors the nation itself.
He referred to the history of the Ekushey Padak, stating that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman introduced the award in independent Bangladesh to recognize those who have enriched the state and society through their contributions. The Prime Minister described the award as a reminder of historic events from the 1952 Language Movement to the present day.
He also expressed optimism that Bangla language and literature will eventually gain global recognition. February 21, according to him, is a symbol of Bangladesh's identity and a significant marker of national consciousness. Tarique Rahman congratulated this year's awardees, wishing them long and creative lives. He remarked that February 21 represents both the struggle for the dignity of the mother tongue and the assertion of rights against oppression.
The Prime Minister paid tribute to the language martyrs and pledged that the state and government would continue to promote education, research, and cultural activities. During the ceremony, he presented Ekushey Padak medals to nine distinguished individuals and one music band for their outstanding contributions in various fields.
The event, led by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani, also featured speeches from Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, State Minister Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam, and Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Mofidur Rahman.
