Dhaka: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today announced the government's commitment to establishing a liberal democratic state system designed to advance knowledge and science across various sectors, including education, literature, arts, science, and technology. "I believe that politicizing education, research, arts, and literature is never a sign of a civilized society," he remarked during the Ekushey Padak-2026 distribution ceremony at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Prime Minister emphasized the role of distinguished individuals in guiding the nation towards enlightenment and prosperity. He noted that while politicians manage the affairs of the state, the wisdom and guidance of learned individuals are invaluable. "The greater the number of accomplished people in a state and society, the more enlightened that society becomes in terms of prosperity and moral standards," he stated.
Tarique Rahman highlighted the historical significance of the Ekushey Padak, first introduced in 1976 by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He explained that the award is not just a medal but a tribute to the historical events of Bangladesh, from the 1952 Language Movement to the present. The award recognizes individuals who have contributed to the enrichment of the state and society through their work in various fields.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the expansion of the Ekushey Padak categories, which are now awarded in at least 12 fields, including Language Movement, Liberation War, education, and arts. This year's recipients include Farida Akhtar Babita for film, Professor Md Abdus Sattar for fine arts, Marina Tabassum for architecture, and Ayub Bachchu posthumously for music, among others.
Reflecting on the significance of International Mother Language Day on February 21, Rahman described February as a month of self-identity and cultural consciousness. He expressed hope that Bangla language and literature would continue to gain recognition globally.
The ceremony, attended by cabinet members, diplomats, and dignitaries, concluded with the Prime Minister congratulating the awardees and expressing his wish for their continued success.
