Dhaka: National Martyred Army Day is being observed on Wednesday to pay tributes to the martyrs of the 2009 Pilkhana massacre. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday issued a message marking National Martyred Army Day.

According to United News of Bangladesh, the Prime Minister expressed that the day had not been observed with due importance after 2009. Since the country's liberation from fascism in 2024, the day has been commemorated as 'Martyred Army Day'. On this occasion, he prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls and extended his sympathy and solidarity to the bereaved families.

The Prime Minister also mentioned that the trial over the Pilkhana killings is ongoing, and due to its sub judice status, detailed comments cannot be made. He highlighted the importance of recognizing the activities that opposed the country's independence and sovereignty, which were behind this massacre. He noted that there were attempts to mislead the public through falsehoods and misinformation following the incident.

The Prime Minister's message emphasized the need to unite against any conspiracy against the country and its people, making a pledge on National Martyred Army Day. On this day in 2009, a tragic massacre occurred at the BDR headquarters in Pilkhana, claiming the lives of 74 people, including 57 army officers.

Among the martyrs were 56 army officers, including the then BDR chief, Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed. Their sacrifice is remembered as a solemn chapter in the nation's history. Each year, the country reflects on this tragic day with deep sorrow, honoring those who laid down their lives in service.
