Dhaka: US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs S. Paul Kapur is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in early March. This visit comes as the United States aims to collaborate with Bangladesh's newly elected government to enhance regional prosperity and security.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the upcoming visit of Paul Kapur was a key topic during a meeting between US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen and Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. The discussion took place at Dr. Rahman's office, where both parties expressed optimism about strengthening Bangladesh-United States relations through increased collaboration across various sectors.
Paul Kapur assumed his role as Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs on October 22, 2025. Ambassador Christensen expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing partnership, emphasizing the mutual goal of making both countries safer, stronger, and more prosperous. He also congratulated Dr. Rahman on his new position as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In addition to his meeting with the Foreign Minister, Ambassador Christensen also visited the State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam. During this meeting, they discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest, underscoring the longstanding partnership between Bangladesh and the United States, which is grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a commitment to peace and development.
The discussions covered key areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, defense and security, development partnership, immigration, and people-to-people exchanges, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Rohingya issue was also addressed, with the Foreign Minister expressing appreciation for ongoing US humanitarian assistance and seeking continued political support for the safe repatriation of displaced Rohingya to Myanmar.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio communicated that the United States is eager to work with Bangladesh's newly elected government to promote prosperity and regional security.
