Bogura: Situated on the outskirts of Bogura town, Al-Jamiatul Islamia Kasemul Ulum Jamil Madrasa is recognized as one of the most prominent Islamic educational institutions in the subcontinent. At the heart of this madrasa lies a mosque that holds the distinction of being the largest in terms of area and one of the oldest mosques in North Bengal.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the institution was established through the efforts of Mufti Suhail Uddin, Chairman of the Jamil Group of Industries. The foundation stone was laid on January 4, 1960 (1380 Hijri) by several revered personalities, including Azizul Haq (RA) and Haji Yunus (RA). Mufti Abdur Rahman (RA), known as Faqihul Millat, was initially responsible for overseeing the educational activities. Presently, his son, Mufti Arshad Rahmani, serves as the Principal (Muhtamim).
The mosque has undergone three phases of renovation over its 67-year history. Each floor of the mosque comprises 33 rows, accommodating approximately 3,000 worshippers at a time. The entire mosque complex can host over 10,000 people for prayers simultaneously.
The mosque is home to 3,000 residential students and over a hundred teachers and staff, ensuring it remains active 24 hours a day. Mufti Ataullah Nizam, Assistant Director of the mosque, shared that even in the early hours, the recitation of the Holy Quran and the supplications of the students can be heard.
Every Friday and during the two Eids, thousands from various districts of North Bengal gather to offer prayers. Despite lacking permanent government funding, this Islamic centre operates through donations and the support of local and expatriate Muslims.
The mosque has become more than a place of worship; it is a symbol of trust and a centre of spiritual tranquility for the people of North Bengal.
