Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman today emphasized the importance of maintaining order during vote counting, asserting that any disturbances would not reflect the will of the people. He highlighted reports indicating that citizens would oppose any form of ‘new fascism.’
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Rahman stated that the nation had regained its voting rights after nearly 17 and a half years, generating widespread enthusiasm. He noted that disrupting this celebratory atmosphere would show a lack of respect for democracy. While addressing reporters at his constituency’s election office in Dhaka-15, he urged all candidates and supporters to refrain from taking the law into their own hands in the event of irregularities, insisting that grievances should be directed to the appropriate authorities.
Dr. Rahman acknowledged reports of temporary occupations of polling centres but noted that these were resolved following intervention by the army. He emphasized the importance of democratic practices, advocating for individuals to freely express their views and decisions, particularly in the context of voting, which he described as a personal choice.
He commended the armed forces for their satisfactory performance, noting their prompt response to issues as they arose, and expressed hope that their continued dedication would lead to positive outcomes for the country.
Discussing voter turnout, Dr. Rahman observed that favorable weather conditions encouraged high voter participation, particularly among young and female voters in the morning. He refrained from speculating on potential victory margins, stressing that such discussions could impede voters’ freedom.
Dr. Rahman acknowledged that no election is ever completely free of flaws but observed that no significant violence had been reported thus far. He concluded by urging that only authorized officials and approved candidate agents be permitted inside polling centers post-voting and called for measures to prevent unnecessary gatherings and tensions at these locations.
