Chuadanga: Police arrested a local leader of Jamaat-e-Islami along with Tk 79,000 in front of a polling centre over allegations of distributing money among voters in Sadar upazila of Chuadanga district on Thursday morning. The arrestee is Sharif, 50, president of No-9 ward unit Jamaat-e-Islami and son of Azizur Rahman alias Aziz Master of Gulshan Para.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, stated that local people caught the Jamaat leader in front of Rizia Khatun Prabati Government Primary School polling centre while he was giving cash money to some voters. Later, he was handed over to the local police station. Police also recovered Tk 79,000 from his possession.
Abdus Sabur, the presiding officer of the polling centre, mentioned, “I heard about the incident but it occurred outside my centre.” The detainee is currently under police custody, and efforts are underway to take legal steps against him, as stated by the officer-in-charge.
In a separate incident, police arrested Shahabuddin from Napitkhali polling station in Damurhuda upazila of the district for casting a fake vote, as reported by Tariqul Islam, the presiding officer of the polling station.
