Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman cast his vote at 8:15 am on Thursday at the Monipur High School (Boys' Branch) polling centre. The Jamaat leader arrived at the polling station around 8 am and completed the voting process shortly thereafter.
According to United News of Bangladesh, voting at the Monipur High School polling centre in the city's Mirpur 60 Feet area commenced in a calm atmosphere. Voters were observed arriving steadily, forming orderly queues to cast their ballots.
Elsewhere in the capital, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman are scheduled to vote at the Gulshan Model School and College centre. This election marks a significant moment for the people of Bangladesh, as they head to the polls after a 17-year hiatus for a historic national election.
The voting, which began at 7:30 am, is set to continue until 4:30 pm without any interruption. It is taking place at 42,659 polling stations across 299 out of 300 constituencies nationwide. The election is being conducted under tight security, with nearly one million security personnel and another one million polling staff deployed to ensure a smooth process.
