Dhaka: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Additional IGP AKM Shahidur Rahman emphasized on Wednesday that there is no risk for general voters in the upcoming national election, cautioning that those who attempt to disrupt the polls will face severe consequences.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Shahidur Rahman addressed concerns at a press briefing held at Rajdhani High School of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital. He stated that the risk is primarily for those intending to sabotage the election. Individuals engaged in activities such as fake voting, ballot box snatching, and attacking polling centers will be at risk. "Those committing such offences are being detained. From today until the election, we will remain on highest alert," he asserted, highlighting RAB's vigilance against electoral misconduct.
Shahidur Rahman further explained that RAB is working in coordination with other agencies to ensure security, acknowledging that covering all polling centers with RAB personnel alone is not feasible. "We are working jointly with all forces to control any possible damage," he said, addressing inquiries about the number of RAB personnel deployed.
In response to questions about potential disruptions at polling centers, Rahman assured that law enforcement would take appropriate actions in case of any incidents. He mentioned that polling could be suspended if a conducive environment for voting is not ensured, with the possibility of re-election at a later date, as per the Election Commission's decision.
The RAB chief reiterated the severe consequences for those attempting to disrupt the election process or reject the results. "We will take the toughest measures without hesitation, in line with our legal mandate," he stated, underscoring the force's commitment to maintaining electoral integrity.
Regarding the deployment strategy, Rahman noted that RAB has been active as a striking and mobile force across all 64 districts and eight metropolitan areas since February 8 and will continue its operations throughout the election day. Adequate measures, he mentioned, are also in place to maintain law and order post-election, expressing confidence that the pre-election period has exceeded public expectations.
