BMDA Conducts Workshop to Finalize Irrigation Management Policy 2026

Rajshahi: The Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) in Rajshahi Division organized a comprehensive workshop to finalize its Mobile Vending Dealer Appointment Policy 2026, focusing on the operation of irrigation equipment and ensuring efficient irrigation management. The workshop, attended by various stakeholders, was held at the Postal Academy Hall Room, with Superintending Engineer Nazirul Islam presiding over the event.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workshop featured BMDA's Executive Director, Abu Sayeed Kamruzzaman, as the chief guest. Additional Chief Engineer Dr. Abul Kasem, superintending engineers Abdul Latif and ATM Mahfuzur Rahman, and Deputy Manager (Agriculture) ATM Rafiqul Islam were present as special guests. A total of 69 representatives from organizations such as Palli Bidyut Rajshahi, Fruit Research, DAE, BADC, PBS, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, and the Rice Research Institute participated in the discussions, which also included participants from the Rajshahi and Bogura Circles.

During the workshop, Executive Director Abu Sayeed Kamruzzaman highlighted the multifaceted contributions of BMDA, which have led to advancements in agricultural productivity, water resource management, and socio-economic development. He emphasized BMDA's impact on 135 upazilas in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions, focusing on agricultural development and water resource management.

In the 2024-25 fiscal year, BMDA undertook significant projects, including the re-excavation of 122 kilometers of canals and 56 ponds, the construction of 22 cross-dams, and the installation of two river pontoons and 56 solar-powered irrigation machines. Currently, BMDA provides irrigation to 6,28,567 hectares of land through 15,560 deep tube wells (DTWs) and 991 low-lift pumps, resulting in an annual production of approximately 70.60 lakh metric tonnes of food crops.

BMDA's efforts in developing irrigation infrastructure, particularly through the installation of DTWs and re-excavation projects, have been instrumental in enhancing agricultural productivity by ensuring water availability during dry periods.
