Patuakhali: Mohammad Abdul Wahab, the candidate representing the 11-party alliance for the Patuakhali-1 constituency in the upcoming 13th national parliament election, has committed to prioritizing health, education, tourism, and road development if elected. Abdul Wahab, a psychiatrist, social worker, writer, and political figure, aims to leverage his diverse background to bring about significant changes in the constituency.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Wahab currently serves as the Senior Joint Chairman of the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party). His journey began with an MBBS degree from Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, followed by a stint as a medical officer in the Bangladesh Army. Furthering his expertise, he earned a Diploma in Psychiatry from Dhaka University and an FCPS in Psychiatry from Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons.
In an interview with BSS, Wahab emphasized his commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector, noting that providing quality treatment in local hospitals and clinics is his top priority. He also plans to enhance educational institutions and expand employment opportunities in the region.
Wahab envisions transforming Kuakata into a world-class tourist destination and expanding the local fishing industry. He has also proposed the construction of a six-lane road to improve communication and foster economic growth.
Addressing the election code of conduct, Wahab stated that party leaders and activists have been instructed to adhere strictly to the electoral code. He noted that no violations have occurred in his constituency, attributing this to increased public awareness and responsibility.
Wahab also expressed support for the July Charter and referendum, aligning his stance with that of his party and alliance. He believes that these measures will help prevent the rise of fascism and encourages a 'yes' vote from the public.
Looking ahead to the elections, Wahab reiterated the importance of a free, fair, and impartial process, echoing the sentiments of those involved in the 2024 mass uprising and those who have faced deprivation over the past 17 years.
Patuakhali-1, encompassing Patuakhali Sadar, Mirzaganj, and Dumki upazilas, holds political significance in the southern region of the Barishal division. The constituency boasts 505,835 voters, including 254,335 male voters, 251,492 female voters, and eight third-gender voters, as per election office records.
Alongside Abdul Wahab, other candidates vying for the seat include BNP nominee Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Abdul Mannan Howlader of Jatiya Party, Gautam Chandra Shil of Bangladesh JASSD, Md Firoz Alam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB), and Shahidul Islam Fahim of the Gono Odikar Parishad.
