Dhaka: The government has annulled the appointment of Md Shafiqur Rahman as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Biman Bangladesh Airlines after his recent arrest related to the abuse of a domestic worker.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Dr. Humaira Sultana, who serves as the Additional Secretary (Biman and Civil Aviation) in the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, has been appointed to take over the responsibilities of the airline’s MD temporarily. This decision comes as an office order was issued by the ministry, detailing that Shafiqur Rahman’s contractual appointment was terminated due to his current incarceration on criminal charges.
The ministry emphasized that the revocation and new appointment are aimed at maintaining efficient and effective management within Biman Bangladesh Airlines. Dr. Humaira will hold the position of Managing Director and CEO until a new MD is selected.
Shafiqur, along with his wife and two others, was apprehended by Uttara West Police early Monday at their residence in Sector 9 of Uttara. The arrest was made in connection with the alleged torture of an 11-year-old domestic worker. Subsequently, a Dhaka court ordered their detention on the same day.
