Dhaka: The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025-2026 tax year until February 28, 2026. This decision was made in the public interest, utilizing the powers granted by Section 334 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, and received prior approval from the government, as per an official notification from the NBR.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the initial deadline for filing income tax returns was set for January 31, 2026. In a significant move, the NBR has mandated the online submission of income tax returns for all individual taxpayers. Taxpayers are required to file their returns via the NBR’s e-return portal at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
Acknowledging challenges related to the registration process in the e-return system, the NBR has offered a conditional relaxation. Taxpayers who are unable to submit their returns online can apply for permission to file a paper return. To do so, they must submit a written application with specific and reasonable justification to the concerned Deputy Commissioner of Taxes by February 15, 2026. Approval from the respective Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes is necessary for submitting a paper-based return.
This initiative aims to advance the digitalisation of the tax administration system, while providing some flexibility for taxpayers experiencing genuine technical issues.
