Chattogram: BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has announced that curbing corruption and ensuring the safety of the people will be the party's top priorities if they come to power. Speaking at a large public rally at Railway Pologround, Rahman emphasized BNP's historical success in dealing with corruption and protecting public interests during its previous tenures.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman criticized the Awami League government for its tenure from 1996 to 2001, accusing it of leading the country into corruption. He highlighted that when BNP, under the leadership of Khaleda Zia, took office in 2001, the party made significant strides in addressing corruption. Rahman asserted that BNP's past governments did not spare even their own members if they were involved in illegal activities and warned that future efforts to disrupt law and order or hinder anti-corruption initiatives would not be tolerated.
Rahman declared that the rule of law would be upheld, ensuring that everyone is treated equally and that legal actions apply uniformly, regardless of identity. He reiterated BNP's commitment to good governance, rule of law, and combating corruption.
He also stressed the importance of public safety, stating that BNP aims to create an environment where people can live and work without obstacles. Rahman expressed confidence that with public support, BNP would enhance law and order in the country.
Highlighting the importance of addressing public safety and corruption, Rahman noted these issues have long deprived people of expected benefits. He pledged to tackle these challenges effectively if BNP gains power, drawing on Khaleda Zia's successful past efforts.
Rahman underscored the need for meaningful change and unity to improve citizens' living standards, focusing on quality education and healthcare. He encouraged new voters to participate in the upcoming election, emphasizing their role in the democratic process.
He expressed hope that elections would be held on February 12 and advised voters to arrive early at polling stations for prayers and to cast their votes.
Rahman shared his strong emotional connection with Chattogram, noting its significance in his family's history. He promised to expedite the plan to elevate Chattogram as the commercial capital if BNP forms the government, highlighting the job opportunities this would create.
Addressing water-logging issues, Rahman proposed restarting canal excavation schemes to alleviate suffering and improve agricultural water preservation. He also emphasized the economic success of Export Processing Zones (EPZs) established by past BNP governments and assured the establishment of more EPZs if given the mandate.
The meeting was presided over by City BNP convener Alhaj Ershad Ullah, with BNP city unit Member Secretary Nazimur Rahman moderating. Other prominent figures addressed the gathering, showcasing the party's united front.
