Dhaka: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 is poised to announce its judgment tomorrow concerning a case of crimes against humanity that transpired in the Chankharpul area of the city on August 5, 2024, resulting in the brutal killing of six individuals.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the judgment was initially scheduled for January 20 but was postponed to January 26 as the verdict was not prepared in time. The accused in this case include former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman, former DMP joint commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former assistant commissioner of DMP's Ramna zone Mohammad Imrul, former inspector Md Arshad Hossain, and constables Md Sujon, Imaj Hossain Emon, and Nasirul Islam. Notably, the first four accused remain at large and are being tried in absentia.
The prosecution lodged the formal charges against all eight accused on May 25, marking it as the inaugural formal charge filed at the ICT in the wake of the July-August mass uprising. The victims of this tragic incident were Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah, all of whom lost their lives on that fateful day.
The tribunal's investigation agency submitted a comprehensive 90-page probe report on April 20, 2025, detailing the events and evidence related to the case.
