Lalmonirhat: Severe cold is a normal phenomenon during the Bangali month of Magh, but the intensity of chilly weather is in a decreasing trend in the northern district of Lalmonirhat, bringing some relief to public life. Magh, which began a few days ago, is typically associated with the most severe cold of the season. However, this year the weather pattern appears somewhat different.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, just a week ago, dense fog and biting cold from early morning to late afternoon severely disrupted daily life. Vehicular movement slowed, and day labourers and transport workers struggled to continue their work amid freezing conditions. In recent days, however, the fog has thinned considerably, sunlight has become visible in the morning, and the overall cold intensity has reduced.
This change has brought noticeable relief to working people across the district. Amjad Ali, 52, a day labourer from Khuniagachh union in Sadar upazila, mentioned that going out to work in the early morning was nearly impossible a few days ago due to thick fog and cold. “Now the sun rises after 7am, and work has started moving again,” he said.
Another labourer, Ilias Ali, 40, of Barabari union, stated he no longer needs to wear heavy winter clothing while working. “Sometimes it even feels warm,” he added.
Ajmul Haque, 30, a van driver from Durgapur union in Aditmari upazila, noted he is now able to start work at his normal time in the morning as the cold pressure has eased. He believes winter conditions may further improve in the coming days.
Similarly, Ismail Hossain, 40, an auto-rickshaw driver from Tushbhandar union in Kaliganj upazila, said regular sunshine over the past two to three days has significantly reduced cold-related suffering.
According to Subal Chandra Sarkar, Officer-in-Charge of the Rajarhat Meteorological Observatory, the minimum temperature recorded on Monday morning was 11 degrees Celsius. He explained that temperatures between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius are considered mild, 6 to 8 degrees moderate, and 4 to 6 degrees severe cold wave conditions.
He added that the lowest temperature recorded in the region during the current winter season was 8.5 degrees Celsius and that the intensity of cold has been gradually decreasing. “At present, there is no threat of a new severe cold wave,” he said.
Overall, the early days of Magh are unfolding with milder cold conditions than usual in Lalmonirhat.
