Dhaka: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has scheduled January 20 for a hearing on an appeal filed by the ICT prosecution. The appeal seeks to enhance the sentence of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal from imprisonment till natural death to the death penalty in the crimes against humanity case related to the July Mass Uprising. Appellate Division Judge-in-Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque issued the short order stating, “Fixed on 20.01.2026,” after reviewing a plea for an early hearing of the petition. The case appeared as item number 58 on the cause list of the Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ICT prosecution submitted the appeal to the Appellate Division on December 15, 2025. The prosecution’s appeal seeks to upgrade the sentence from imprisonment till natural death to the death penalty for specific crimes against humanity committed by Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal during the July Mass Uprising. The appeal, labeled “Criminal Appeal No 96/2025: Chief Prosecutor vs Sheikh Hasina and another,” was filed on eight grounds.
On November 17, ICT-1 found Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal guilty of crimes against humanity, citing superior command responsibility. The tribunal, led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mozumder, sentenced them to imprisonment till natural death on three counts under charge one and to death on three counts under charge two. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was also found guilty but received a five-year sentence due to his cooperation as an approver. The tribunal ordered the confiscation of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s properties and mandated compensation for the families of the July martyrs and the injured.
