Dhaka: BNP has expressed concern over several incidents surrounding the upcoming 13th National Parliament Election, terming the overall election environment and certain specific activities as ‘unethical, illegal and obstacles to a fair election.’ BNP Standing Committee member and Chairman of the Election Steering Committee Nazrul Islam Khan voiced the concerns at a press conference held at the BNP Chairman’s political office in Gulshan this evening.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Khan highlighted the activities of a political party that is allegedly targeting poor and less-educated voters across Dhaka and other metropolitan areas by collecting photocopies of their NID cards, phone numbers, and bKash numbers. He expressed fears that these actions could lead to the creation of fake NIDs for fraudulent voting and potentially use bKash numbers to influence voters with monetary incentives.

Khan criticized the Election Commission for its inaction despite reports circulating on social and traditional media. He revealed that BNP had discussed these concerns with the Chief Election Commissioner and other officials, but no measures have been taken yet. He urged the Election Commission to take immediate legal action to prevent such ‘crimes.’

Further allegations were raised regarding the layout of postal ballot papers. Khan claimed that the current design unfairly positions the BNP’s symbol unfavorably compared to others, suggesting intentional bias. He called for a reprint of the postal ballot papers, citing research that indicates symbol position can significantly influence voting outcomes.

Khan also reported irregularities with postal ballots abroad, including a viral video from Bahrain showing the mishandling of over 200 ballot papers. He demanded thorough investigations and appropriate sanctions for those involved.

Additionally, Khan criticized the Election Commission for its perceived double standards in applying the electoral code of conduct, noting that BNP candidates have been cautioned more strictly than their counterparts in other parties.

The BNP leader emphasized the party’s commitment to a fair and peaceful election, advocating for a level playing field for all parties. He reaffirmed BNP’s historical role in re-establishing democracy in Bangladesh and its ongoing struggle for a democratic electoral process.

Khan concluded by assuring the public of BNP’s dedication to ensuring that all citizens can exercise their voting rights in a peaceful and secure environment. He noted, however, that the Election Commission has yet to officially respond to these serious allegations.
