Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today expressed profound shock at the death of three-time former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia. “At the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, the nation has lost a great guardian. I am deeply shocked and saddened by her death,” he said in a condolence message this morning. Prof Yunus emphasized that Begum Khaleda Zia was not just a political leader but a significant figure in Bangladesh’s history.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Begum Khaleda Zia’s contributions to the nation’s democratic movement were acknowledged by the government, which recently declared her a Very Very Important Person of the state. The Chief Adviser highlighted her role in promoting democracy, multiparty political culture, and citizens’ rights in Bangladesh. Prof Yunus noted that her leadership repeatedly liberated the nation from undemocratic situations, inspiring citizens to reclaim democracy.
Despite political differences, Prof Yunus praised Begum Zia’s long political career dedicated to national welfare, citing her people-oriented leadership and firm resolve. Her death marks the loss of an experienced and proven statewoman. He recalled her as the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, who led efforts to restore democracy against autocratic rule.
Prof Yunus recounted that Begum Khaleda Zia entered active politics in 1982 after the death of her husband, former President and freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman. Her leadership was pivotal in toppling autocrat Ershad’s nine-year-long regime. He mentioned her notable contributions such as introducing free education and stipends for girls, advancing women’s education in Bangladesh.
The Chief Adviser reflected on her political successes, noting that she was never defeated in any election and won multiple parliamentary constituencies from 1991 to 2008. As Prime Minister in 1991, she laid a strong economic foundation through liberalization. During Sheikh Hasina’s rule, Begum Khaleda Zia symbolized struggle and resistance, inspiring the nation with her uncompromising stance.
Prof Yunus lamented that her political success led to extreme political vengeance, resulting in her being sentenced to 17 years in prison on false charges. He offered deep condolences to her bereaved family and party members and urged the nation to remain calm. He requested everyone to pray for her eternal peace.
