Dhaka: Former interim government adviser and leading figure of the July uprising, Mahfuj Alam, has stated that maintaining his long-standing political stance is more crucial than running as a candidate for the Jamaat-NCP alliance in any Dhaka constituency. In a Facebook post made this evening, he quashed any speculation regarding his electoral ambitions, emphasizing the importance of his enduring political position.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mahfuj highlighted the formation and organization of the Nagorik Committee and the National Citizen Party (NCP) under the leadership of the July Uprising. He noted that many of his comrades from the July movement continue to be active within these platforms. Over the past eighteen months, he has been providing support through advice, guidance, and policy-level cooperation.
Mahfuj reiterated that his political agenda has consistently aimed at establishing a new political and economic order, resisting fascism via cultural struggle, confronting social fascism, promoting reconciliation, and building a society grounded in responsibility and compassion. He acknowledged that although he endeavored to develop the NCP into an independent, broad-based "July umbrella" platform, these efforts have not been fully realized due to various limitations.
While Mahfuj continues to express respect and solidarity with his July comrades, he clarified that he is not joining the NCP at this juncture. He also refuted claims that he declined an offer from the Jamaat-NCP alliance, asserting that such claims are inaccurate.
Addressing the current political climate, Mahfuj described Bangladesh as being in a "cold war" political phase. He advocated for remaining true to one's principles without aligning with any particular side. He expressed optimism about the emergence of an alternative, moderate youth and July-based political force and committed to continuing his political, cultural, and intellectual engagement based on the principles he has maintained over the past one and a half years.
