Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today asserted that academic degrees alone are insufficient for maintaining competitiveness in the global arena; competence, discipline, and credibility are equally important. He made these comments while presiding over the 7th Convocation of the State University of Bangladesh (SUB) held at the university’s permanent campus in Purbachal New Town, Dhaka.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, this year’s convocation was dedicated to the memory of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. Dr Asif Nazrul stated that although Bangladesh has made significant progress at the individual level over the past 54 years of independence, it has fallen behind in building robust and sustainable institutions. He highlighted that institutions such as the police, judiciary, and civil administration, once on a progressive path, have weakened over the last decade and a half, complicating effective governance.

Drawing parallels with post-Second World War Europe, Dr Asif Nazrul underscored that sustainable national development hinges on strong institutions. He noted that countries investing in institution-building advanced, while in Bangladesh, individuals and families were often prioritized over institutions, leading to achievements that did not endure. He began his speech by paying tribute to the late Osman Hadi and praying for the eternal peace of his soul.

Representing the Hon’ble Chancellor and President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Dr Asif Nazrul led the convocation ceremony. The Convocation Speaker was Professor Dr. SMA Faiz, Chairman of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC). Dr Asif Nazrul remarked that today’s graduates are talented and courageous, as learning extends beyond textbooks. With rapid technological advancement, education is expanding and presenting new challenges, which he urged should be transformed into opportunities. He praised the role of youth in building a new Bangladesh and encouraged graduates to contribute to nation-building guided by humanity and ethical values.

The welcome address was delivered by Professor Dr Md Akhter Hossain Khan, Vice-Chancellor of the State University of Bangladesh. Other speakers included Dr AM Shamim, President of the SUB Board of Trustees; Dr Md Mahbubur Rahman, Vice-President; Professor Dr Nawzia Yasmin, Pro-Vice Chancellor; along with deans from various faculties. At this convocation, a total of 672 graduates from 10 departments were awarded undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Additionally, three students received the Chancellor’s Gold Medal, four received the Vice-Chancellor’s Silver Medal, and 20 students were honored with the Dean’s Award.

On this occasion, members of the Syndicate and Academic Council, faculty members, and graduates entered the campus through the main gate at 11:00 am and participated in the traditional convocation procession. The daylong ceremony concluded in the evening with a vibrant cultural programme. The event was attended by current students, faculty members, alumni, registered graduates, members of the Syndicate and Academic Council, military and civil officials, media professionals, and other distinguished guests.
