Geneva: UN Human Rights Chief Volker Trk expressed deep concern over the killing of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, a prominent leader of last year's protests in Bangladesh, who succumbed to his injuries after being shot last week. Trk called for calm and urged everyone to refrain from violence, emphasizing that retaliation would only deepen divisions and undermine rights.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Trk requested the authorities to conduct a prompt, impartial, thorough, and transparent investigation into the attack that resulted in Hadi's death. He stressed the importance of ensuring due process and accountability for those responsible.
Following the announcement of Hadi's death on Thursday, protests erupted in various locations across the country. Several buildings were torched and vandalized, and reports indicate that a number of journalists have been assaulted.
With the parliamentary elections scheduled for February, Trk highlighted the necessity of ensuring a safe and peaceful environment for public participation and the free expression of diverse views. He called on authorities to uphold the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and the security of journalists to prevent further unrest.
The High Commissioner stated that his office is prepared to collaborate with authorities and stakeholders to support efforts that uphold human rights and prevent further violence.
