Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today stated that the recent attack on two of the country's leading media houses is equivalent to an assault on the freedom of the press. This incident, he emphasized, poses a significant barrier to the nation's democratic progress and the path of independent journalism.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser expressed these sentiments during a phone conversation with the editors of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, following an attack on the media outlets on Thursday night. The statement was released by the Chief Adviser's Press Wing this afternoon.
Prof Yunus extended his heartfelt sympathy to Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman and The Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam, describing the attack on their institutions and journalists as deeply shocking. He assured them of the government's support, stating, "In this difficult time, the government stands beside you."
During the conversation, the Chief Adviser promised full security for the editors and their media organizations, along with any necessary support required. He also mentioned plans to meet with the editors in person soon to further discuss the situation.
