Chittagong: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr A F M Khalid Hossain today emphasized that the mentality of clinging to power is pushing the country backward. He made this remark during a discussion at the University of Chittagong, organized to mark International Arabic Language Day.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Khalid expressed concerns regarding the upcoming national election scheduled for February 12, stating that the current government is committed to handing over power peacefully once the new government takes oath. He highlighted the importance of the Arabic language, noting that it is the official language of over 25 countries and holds significant global demand in various sectors such as religious, economic, diplomatic, commercial, and labor.
Dr Khalid urged universities to enhance students' language proficiency, emphasizing that Arabic students have access to global scholarship opportunities. He also criticized the politicization of universities and voiced hopes for reforms in recruitment and academic culture.
During the event, Dr Khalid announced plans to establish an Islamic Foundation Corner at the University of Chittagong, along with providing mosque carpets and one-time scholarships for 25 students in the Arabic department. Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Yeahia Akhter and senior university officials were present at the programme.
