Dhaka: The Advisory Council Committee on Government Purchase has recommended procuring one cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the international spot market to address the country's increasing energy needs. This decision was reached during a committee meeting held at the Cabinet Division Conference Room at the Bangladesh Secretariat, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the proposal was submitted by the Energy and Mineral Resources Division in alignment with the Public Procurement Rules 2025. The plan involves procuring one LNG cargo scheduled for delivery between January 9-10, 2026, at a total cost of approximately Taka 420.09 crore. The unit price has been set at US$ 9.99 per MMBTU, with South Korea-based Posco International Corporation recommended as the supplier.
Officials indicated that importing LNG would support uninterrupted gas supply for power generation and industrial use, particularly amid the heightened demand during the winter season.
