2 AL Leaders Arrested in Manik Mia Murder Case in Rangpur

Rangpur: Police have arrested two Awami League (AL) leaders in connection with the murder case of auto-rickshaw driver Manik Mia, who was killed on July 18 last year during the anti-discrimination student movement in Rangpur city.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the arrests were made in the city's Najirdigar area at 3:30 am on Sunday. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tajhat police station, Md Ataur Rahman, confirmed the arrests of Md Aminul Islam alias Amir, 55, and Md Shafiqul Islam, 50, who are both residents of the Najirdigar area under the Tajhat police station of Rangpur metropolis.

The arrested individuals, Md Aminul Islam alias Amir and Md Shafiqul Islam, are the accused in the martyr Manik Mia murder case, which was filed at the Tajhat police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police on June 6, 2025. Md Aminul Islam alias Amir serves as the Forest and Agriculture Affairs Secretary of Ward No. 31 Awami League, while Md Shafiqul Islam is the General Secretary of the same ward unit.

Manik Mia, aged 35 and the son of the late Sekendar Ali from Purbo Ghaghot Para area in the city's Ward No. 15, was killed in police firing while participating in the anti-discrimination student movement in the Rangpur Model College Gate area on July 18 last year.

The OC further stated that the arrested AL leaders, Md Aminul Islam alias Amir and Md Shafiqul Islam, were produced before the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Court, from where they were subsequently sent to jail.
