Dhaka: BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is currently being treated with ventilation support. A press release from the medical board formed for her treatment detailed her current medical situation, noting that due to increased breathing difficulties, a drop in blood oxygen levels, and a rise in carbon dioxide, she was initially placed on a High-Flow Nasal Cannula and BiPAP machine. However, with no improvement, she was put on 'elective ventilator support' to allow her lungs and other organs to rest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the medical board noted that Khaleda Zia's dialysis was initiated due to kidney function failure and continues to be administered regularly. Complications from gastrointestinal bleeding and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) have necessitated transfusions of blood and various blood components. An echocardiogram revealed aortic valve issues, and a Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) test detected Infective Endocarditis, prompting treatment based on international guidelines.
The medical team detected Acute Pancreatitis on November 27, and treatment for this condition is ongoing. Severe bacterial and fungal infections have also been identified, leading to the administration of strong antibiotics and antifungal treatments. A multidisciplinary team of domestic and foreign specialists is closely monitoring Khaleda Zia's condition daily and providing necessary care.
The doctors have requested the media and public to avoid spreading incorrect or unverified information, urging trust in the Medical Board and respect for the patient's privacy. Khaleda Zia has a history of chronic complications, including liver, kidney, heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Her recent admission to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on November 23 followed increased breathing difficulties, cough, and fever, leading to a rapid transfer from the cabin to the Critical Care Unit after tests revealed a sharp deterioration in her lungs, heart, and kidneys.
