Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed today stated that the ousted prime minister and death-row convict Sheikh Hasina's government has destroyed the nation's democratic system. He made these remarks at a street rally held at Harbang Bazar in Chakaria.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized the long struggle of pro-democracy people that led to the ousting of the Awami League regime, resulting in its leaders fleeing the country. He also wished for the recovery of critically ailing BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who he noted has played an uncompromising role in the fight for democracy.
Salahuddin Ahmed pointed out the necessity for an election and expressed his optimistic belief that the public will support BNP in forming the next government. He pledged that if BNP takes office, it will ensure the full independence of the judiciary and establish the rule of law.
He further stated that upgrading the Cox's Bazar-Chattogram Highway to six lanes will be a priority for BNP if they assume office. The initiative to build the country's only deep seaport in Cox's Bazar, which began during BNP's tenure, is expected to become operational within one and a half years, making the highway expansion essential.
Salahuddin Ahmed also expressed hope that the Election Commission will soon announce the schedule for the national parliamentary elections, allowing BNP candidates to commence their campaigns. He remarked that after a long period of one and a half decades, people will finally have the opportunity to exercise their voting rights. He described this election as the most significant in the country's history, aiming to restore democracy and free the nation from fascism and authoritarian rule.
Earlier in the day, Salahuddin Ahmed campaigned in various localities of his constituency, including Nunachhari, Noya Para, Rakhine Para, Harbang Bazar, Kala Sikder Para, Gudar Para, Saudagar Para, and Pahartali of Harbang Union in Chakaria.
