Dhaka: Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (RAJUK) Chairman Engineer Md Riazul Islam today emphasized the need for collaboration among multiple organizations to address earthquake-related aspects of building safety in Dhaka. He indicated that while RAJUK is currently responsible for approving building designs and overseeing construction, sharing supervisory duties with other organizations could enhance the effectiveness of these activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Islam made these remarks during a debate competition organized by Debate for Democracy, focusing on the responsibilities of building owners in minimizing earthquake damage in Dhaka. He highlighted the ongoing issue related to a building damaged in an earthquake on November 21 in Kasaituli, where the owner has yet to be identified. However, he noted that building owners in the area are cooperating with RAJUK to address the challenges.
Islam further explained that RAJUK is confiscating electricity meters from illegal buildings and, if necessary, pursuing legal action and demolition. He reiterated RAJUK's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against irregularities and corruption, noting that departmental investigations are underway against corrupt officials and employees.
Additionally, action is being taken against engineers and architects who approve building designs without verifying their compliance with safety standards. The event concluded with Shaheed Bir-Uttam Lt Anwar Girls School and College defeating St Joseph Higher Secondary School in the debate competition. Participants were awarded trophies, crests, and certificates, with adjudicators including Professor Abu Muhammad Rais and journalists Mainul Alam, Masud Karim, Saidul Islam, and Dr. Shakila Jasmine.
