Cumilla: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Russel Sheikh, the prime accused in the murder of his wife, Eti Khatun, whose body was found dumped in a pond in Gopalganj. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of RAB-6 (CPC Sadar Company, Bhatiapara Camp) and RAB-11 (CPC-2 Cumilla) conducted a special operation on Thursday night in Charbakar Bazar, under Debidwar Police Station in Cumilla, resulting in the arrest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, during the raid, RAB detained Russel Sheikh, 30, son of Md Layek Sheikh of Latifpur village in Govindapur Union under Muksudpur upazila. The case statement revealed that Russel and his wife were involved in longstanding family disputes. It is alleged that due to these conflicts, Russel and several accomplices strangled Eti with a towel inside their home sometime between 8 pm on November 23 and 6 pm on November 30.
The accused later placed the body in a sack, attached four bricks to it, and dumped it beneath water hyacinths in their pond on the eastern side of their house to conceal the crime. On the evening of November 30, locals noticed the sack floating in the pond and informed Muksudpur Police Station. The police recovered the body and took it to the station.
Following the incident, family members of the victim rushed to the police station. Eti's brother, Md Selim, 37, subsequently filed a murder case against Russel and others. RAB has handed over the arrested Russel Sheikh to Cumilla Kotwali Police Station for further legal action, as stated in the press release.
