Dhaka: Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam is set to assume the role of acting Chief Justice from December 19 to 24, 2025, as Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed is scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia for the holy Umrah.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a notice from the Law and Justice Division indicates that Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam will undertake the duties of the Chief Justice during this period or until Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed returns to office.
The notice, signed by Law and Justice Division Secretary Liaquet Ali Molla, confirmed that Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, the senior-most judge of the Appellate Division, has received presidential approval to fulfill the responsibilities of the Chief Justice as per Article 97 of the Constitution.
