Habiganj: Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) has commenced the supply of an additional 26 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas to the national grid from the Habiganj-5 well. The initiative follows the successful workover of the well, increasing its output from a previous 14 mmcfd. This development was officially inaugurated by Md Rezanur Rahman, Chairman of Petrobangla, in a ceremony held in Habiganj.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the workover of Habiganj-5 was executed by Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex). The well, initially drilled in 1988 to a depth of 3,521 meters, was producing 14 mmcfd at 1,521 PSI before undergoing the recent enhancements. Mohammad Ismail Molla, Project Director of BGFCL, highlighted the installation of a new completion string, X-mass tree, and sub-surface safety valve as part of the workover, aimed at boosting production and ensuring a safe and continuous gas supply.
The workover commenced on October 24, 2025, and concluded on December 2, 2025, facilitating the discovery of two major gas sands-Upper Sand and Lower Sand-in the Habiganj field. Out of 11 wells in the field, six are currently extracting and supplying approximately 90 mmcfd of gas to the national grid from the Upper Gas Sand. Habiganj well-5, specifically, is expected to sustain gas production for an extended period.
The project director stated that if the gas production from Habiganj well-5 maintains a rate of 25 mmcfd, it could yield 140 billion cubic feet of gas over the next 10 to 15 years. The market value of this gas, based on current LNG prices, amounts to Taka 22,200 crore, while the workover cost was estimated at Taka 75 crore.
