Dhaka: European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller today expressed optimism about the prospects of holding a free and fair election in Bangladesh. He emphasized that this is an opportunity for Dhaka to demonstrate it can reverse the global trend of democratic backsliding. Miller shared these views following a meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner, as discussions focus on the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election scheduled for next year.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Ambassador Miller responded to a question by a BSS journalist, highlighting the need for all stakeholders in Bangladesh to concentrate on the possibility of conducting the first free and fair elections in many years. He conveyed a message of hope, urging the nation to seize this moment to buck the trend of democratic backsliding and to reset its reputation with international partners by organizing elections in a correct and professional manner.
When questioned about the country's overall condition and the Election Commission's measures to ensure credible and fair polls, Miller expressed his optimism. He noted that the Election Commission is proactively considering potential complexities and is implementing all conceivable preventive measures. Miller remarked that while an election schedule has yet to be announced, the EU looks forward to supporting the first democratic elections Bangladesh has seen in a significant period.
The ambassador underscored the EU's commitment to supporting timely, smooth, and participatory elections in Bangladesh. He mentioned the recent privilege of joining the Chief Election Commissioner in a mock exercise designed to ensure the commission's readiness for elections and a referendum on the July charter. Miller was impressed by the level of preparation and the consideration given to logistical challenges.
He reaffirmed the EU's recognition of the Bangladesh Election Commission's commitment and professionalism, noting its capacity to organize well-prepared elections. The EU is planning to deploy a large election observer mission to Bangladesh, reflecting confidence in the election process and support for democratic exercises in the country. Miller acknowledged challenges, particularly regarding a generation of citizens who have not participated in previous polls, emphasizing the importance of logistical understanding on election and referendum days.
Earlier, at 10:45 am, a four-member delegation led by the EU Ambassador visited the Chief Election Commissioner at his office.
