Dhaka: A High Court (HC) bench today issued a rule on the government on a writ challenging the Provision of the Representation of the People Order (RPO) which made it mandatory for a candidate of an alliance to run in the election with their own party election symbol. The HC bench, comprising Justice Fatema Nazib and Justice Fatema Anwar, issued the rule, asking the respondents to reply within the next 10 days.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, senior lawyer Ahsanul Karim moved the writ on behalf of the petitioner, Md Mominul Amin. Amin, who serves as the Secretary General of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), an alliance of several small political parties led by Boby Hajjaz, filed the writ. The petitioner requested the High Court to suspend the RPO provision of the Election Commission, which prohibits small parties within an election alliance from running in the election with the symbol of the main political party.
The government had published the ordinance of the RPO on November 3, 2025. As per the amendment, a group of political parties can contest in the national general election as an alliance, but they are required to use their own symbols during the election.
