Lalmonirhat: Chief Coordinator of the Teesta River Protection Movement and Organizing Secretary of the BNP, Principal Asadul Habib Dulu, has emphasized the necessity of an elected government to ensure effective management of the administration. He voiced his concerns during a public sit-in demonstration at Mission Moor in Lalmonirhat district town.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the demonstration was organized by local residents protesting the authorities' inaction after a week-long closure of the road adjacent to the Mahendranagar Biswa Godown. The senior BNP leader criticized the district administration for what he described as 'severe negligence' in addressing the closure of the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway.
Dulu argued that a political government is essential for efficient administration, adding that current administrative units operate without adequate supervision, resulting in a lack of accountability. He claimed that such mismanagement has long led to discrimination against Lalmonirhat district.
Explaining the cause of the road closure, Dulu mentioned that a small truck had overturned, damaging an electric tower and disrupting communications along a critical route from Burimari to Teesta, which he referred to as the 'lifeline of Lalmonirhat.' He expressed disappointment with the administration's failure to restore communication promptly, noting that the delay was due to various excuses and a lack of coordination among government departments.
Despite contacting all relevant offices, Dulu reported that the responsible parties continued to blame each other. Although district officials engaged with him after the sit-in was announced, he argued that they could have earlier restored the communication line at Mahipur Bridge for emergency movement, thus preventing further damage to regional roads.
Dulu highlighted that the heavy congestion on the Kulahat, Mahendranagar, and Kazi Chaura roads had become so severe that even ambulances struggled to pass. He warned of larger protests if the issue remained unresolved, declaring, 'If the administration does not take prompt action, we will be forced to announce a larger program from tomorrow.'
He also criticized the insufficient media attention to the prolonged disruption, suggesting that active media involvement could expedite a resolution. A number of BNP leaders and social organizations participated in the sit-in, including District BNP Senior Vice President Advocate Fazlul Haque Sarkar and other prominent figures.
