Madaripur: A schoolgirl was killed and another seriously injured on Friday evening when a speeding private car hit them near the Hobiganj bridge area under Bahadurpur union in Sadar upazila of the district. The deceased was identified as Suraiya Kazi, 10, daughter of Delwar Kazi of the same union. The injured girl, Mim Kazi, 12, is the daughter of Mamun Kazi.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, witnesses stated that the two girls were crossing the road when a reckless private car ran them over, resulting in Suraiya's death on the spot and causing severe injuries to Mim. The tragic incident sparked outrage among the local residents, prompting them to set the private car on fire and detain one of the co-passengers, who was then handed over to the police. However, three other passengers managed to escape the scene.
Local residents alleged that the individuals in the car were teenagers and appeared to be under the influence of drugs. They attributed the accident to the reckless speed and irresponsible driving of the car's driver and passengers.
Officer-in-Charge Adil Hossain of Madaripur Sadar Police Station informed BSS that the police responded promptly upon receiving information about the incident and were able to restore order. "Locals caught one person from the car and handed him over to us. Necessary steps are being taken to identify the others who fled and bring them under the law," he said.
Hossain added that Suraiya's body has been handed over to her family, while Mim is receiving treatment at Madaripur Sadar Hospital. Police are actively working to identify the car's owner, driver, and the absconding passengers by reviewing CCTV footage and gathering information from local sources. They are also interviewing eyewitnesses to corroborate the details of the incident.
