Dhaka: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has emphasized that sustainable development is unattainable without fairness in the economic system of the country. He pointed out that a principled, transparent, and just economic structure is essential for a nation to progress.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman made these remarks during the 'Fourth Bangladesh Economic Conference 2025: Future Economic Roadmap and Political Commitment' held at a hotel in the capital. The event was organized by Daily Bonik Barta. Dr. Rahman highlighted the role of individuals from all economic backgrounds in contributing to the national economy, noting that everyone from beggars to industrialists pays taxes.
Expressing concern over the country's failure to convert its growing population into productive human resources, Dr. Rahman noted that approximately one-fourth of children from marginalized communities drop out of school due to poverty. He stressed that these children could have become future economists or national leaders if supported by society and the state.
Dr. Rahman also discussed the obstacles faced by entrepreneurs in Bangladesh, citing corruption, bureaucratic hurdles, and procedural delays as significant challenges. He explained that these issues lead to extended project timelines and non-performing loans, which deter both local and foreign investors.
The Jamaat leader further remarked on the brain drain phenomenon, where talented individuals leave Bangladesh for better opportunities abroad. He emphasized the need for intellectual remittance alongside financial remittance and called for dignity and a conducive working environment to retain skilled professionals.
He concluded by asserting the importance of prioritizing education reform, eradicating corruption, and ensuring justice to build a stable and just society. Dr. Rahman underscored the need for political sincerity and accountability to the public, advocating for rational and constructive changes to guide future generations.
The event also saw speeches from prominent figures, including BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and others, with the session moderated by Bonik Barta Editor Dewan Hanif Mahmud.
