Dhaka: Baul singers and their supporters today called upon the government to increase protection measures to safeguard their community and the cultural heritage they embody, aiming to preserve the native Baul culture.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the demand was highlighted during a gathering organized by Baul supporters at the Central Shaheed Minar this afternoon. The participants emphasized the peaceful and spiritual nature of the Baul community, expressing concern that any threat to their shrines or spiritual centers could endanger the very existence of Baul culture in the country.
The attendees appealed for heightened security to protect Bengali folk music and the spiritual heritage inherent in the Baul cultural tradition. They stressed that Baul music and folk traditions are crucial elements of Bengal's history, conveying messages of humanity, compassion, and spirituality across generations.
In a call for social harmony and peace, the speakers warned that if Bauls continue to be targeted due to distorted religious interpretations, the native and local culture would be at risk. The gathering, which featured several Baul singers and supporters from across the country, was led by key speaker Poet Farhad Mazhar.
