Khulna: Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Mokhter Hossain emphasized the significant role of the livestock sector in the country's economic development, employment generation, and food and nutrition security. He made these remarks while inaugurating the National Livestock Week programmes in Khulna city as the chief guest.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the National Livestock Week commenced at the Joragate C and B Colony field with a variety of events, including a colourful rally, a livestock exhibition, and a discussion. This year's theme is "Indigenous Breeds, Modern Technology: Advancing Livestock Development." The Divisional Commissioner underscored the necessity of maintaining proper standards in milk, eggs, and meat production, highlighting the importance of both government initiatives and collective efforts to build a successful livestock sector.
Md Mokhter Hossain also pointed out the need for training farmers in scientific methods of animal husbandry and creating a supportive environment for small-scale entrepreneurs to ensure safe, toxin-free food for consumers. The discussion was chaired by Khulna Deputy Commissioner ASM Jashim Uddin and featured Dr. ABM Zakir Hossain, acting director of the Divisional Livestock Office; Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim, principal of Khulna Institute of Livestock Science and Technology; and Dr. SM Ferdous, syndicate member of Khulna Agricultural University as special guests.
District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Shariful Islam delivered the welcome speech, while SM Sohrab Hossain, general secretary of the Poultry-Fish Feed Owners Association, and Md. Tofazzel Hossain Tushar also addressed the gathering. The event was co-organized by the District Administration and the District Livestock Office.
Earlier in the day, the chief guest visited the livestock exhibition stalls, which showcased a diverse array of animals, vaccines, medicines, animal feed, technological innovations, livestock products, as well as production, preservation, and marketing techniques. The rally, a highlight of the programme, started and concluded at the Joragate C and B Colony field, with participation from people across various walks of life.
As part of the National Livestock Week, a free vaccination and deworming campaign for ducks and chickens is scheduled for tomorrow from 10 am to 3 pm at the livestock market field in Joragate.
