Dhaka: Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has identified approximately 300 buildings in the capital as being vulnerable to earthquakes. These buildings, both small and large, were highlighted by RAJUK Chairman Engineer Riazul Islam during a meeting at the Institute of Engineers Bangladesh (IEB) attended by quake experts and engineers discussing post-earthquake activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, RAJUK's chief town planner, M Ashraful Islam, explained over the phone that a primary survey conducted across the capital revealed the vulnerability of these buildings through observable 'cracks and tilts'. This survey was initiated following a tremor measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale that shook the capital on Friday, followed by three additional tremors the next day. Eight RAJUK teams were deployed to perform the primary survey work.
The meeting at IEB saw the participation of Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, who provided policy directives aimed at minimizing damage from future tremors. Experts in earthquake disaster management, including Professor Mehedi Ahmed Ansari and Professor Tanvir Manjur from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), presented papers on preparedness and management strategies for post-earthquake scenarios.
Adilur Rahman Khan emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts among all government agencies alongside public preparedness to mitigate earthquake risks. Rizwana Hasan advocated for increased public awareness regarding earthquakes and recommended a comprehensive assessment of vulnerable buildings by RAJUK.
Additionally, Housing and Works Secretary M Nazrul Islam instructed RAJUK to enhance field-level supervision to ensure proper construction practices and adherence to a 'zero tolerance' stance against corruption. The RAJUK chairman called for support from all stakeholders, including building developers and owners, alongside government agencies, stressing the necessity of coordinated efforts to manage post-earthquake situations in the capital.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various government offices, emergency service providers, professional organizations, and researchers from universities, including BUET and Dhaka University, as well as members of REHAB and the two city corporations.
