Dhaka: Religious Affairs Adviser Dr. AFM Khalid Hossain today emphasized that the long-standing efforts of Islamic scholars and clerics have not been in vain, as Islamic forces in Bangladesh have regained strength to stand with dignity after 54 years of repression and adversity. Speaking at a seminar titled "Muslim Family Law: The Bangladesh Context", organized by the Bangladesh Mosque Mission at the National Museum, Dr. Khalid underscored the importance of unity among Islamic forces.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Khalid addressed the controversial Muslim Family Laws Ordinance of 1961, highlighting that many of its provisions were in direct conflict with Islamic Shariah. He recalled the movements, seminars, and symposiums organized by scholars of that time to oppose the law, although they were ultimately unable to prevent its enactment by then military ruler Ayub Khan.
Dr. Khalid also brought attention to the misuse of divorce practices, stating that the abuse of 'talaq' often results in emotional distress for families. He criticized the imposition of 'Hilla Marriage' on women, calling it degrading and dishonorable to Islam. He emphasized that no scholar or 'Mufti' holds the authority to impose penalties under Islamic law, and such responsibilities lie with the courts and administration.
He further discussed the longstanding demand for Shariah-based laws, noting that despite presenting this demand for 54 years, tangible results remain elusive without a parliamentary majority of Shariah-following individuals. Dr. Khalid stressed the necessity for strategic, long-term planning to achieve significant structural changes.
The seminar, chaired by Bangladesh Mosque Mission President Principal Maulana Zainul Abedin, featured a keynote paper by Dr. ABM Mahbubul Islam, former professor of the International Islamic University. Prof. Dr. Naqib Mohammad Nasrullah, Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University, participated as the main discussant, with Islamic Arabic University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Shamsul Alam and Pro-VC Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shahidul Islam addressing the gathering as special guests. The event saw participation from Islamic scholars, academics, media professionals, students, and various community members.
